Why We Recommend Cod Liver Oil

If there is one supplement that has stood the test of time in my personal health routine, it is cod liver oil. I have been taking it frequently for over 30 years- long before it became a trending topic in wellness circles. And in all that time, my confidence in it has only grown.

Here at our clinic, we do not recommend supplements lightly. Every product we carry has been carefully evaluated, and cod liver oil remains one of the most foundational recommendations we make to our patients. Let me tell you why.

What Is Cod Liver Oil?

Cod liver oil is exactly what it sounds like — oil extracted from the liver of cod fish. It has been used for centuries as a nutrient-dense food source, and for good reason. Unlike most supplements that isolate individual vitamins or compounds, cod liver oil delivers a naturally occurring combination of nutrients that work together the way nature intended:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) — essential fats your body cannot produce on its own

  • Vitamin A (retinol) — in its most bioavailable, ready-to-use form

  • Vitamin D — the nutrient most people are chronically deficient in

These nutrients do not just coexist in cod liver oil; they complement each other. Vitamins A and D work in tandem to support immune regulation, and the omega-3s amplify the anti-inflammatory benefits. It is a synergy you simply cannot replicate with isolated supplements.

The Benefits We See

Over three decades of personal use and years of recommending cod liver oil to patients, here is what I have come to trust:

Immune support. Vitamin A is known as the anti-inflammation vitamin for its critical role in immune function. Combined with Vitamin D, which most of us lack in adequate amounts, cod liver oil offers meaningful immune system support year-round.

Brain and mood health. EPA and DHA are essential for healthy brain function. Research continues to highlight the connection between omega-3 deficiency and mood imbalances, cognitive decline, and neurological health.

Bone and joint health. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, and Vitamin A supports bone cell activity. Together, they lay the foundation for strong, healthy bones; something that matters at every stage of life.

Skin health. Patients often notice improvements in skin clarity and hydration. The combination of fat-soluble vitamins and omega-3s nourishes skin from the inside out.

Inflammation reduction. Chronic inflammation is at the root of so many modern health conditions. The omega-3s in cod liver oil are among the most well-researched natural tools we have for managing inflammatory pathways.

Why We Chose Rosita

Not all cod liver oils are created equal, and this is where quality truly matters.

After more than 30 years of using and evaluating cod liver oil, I am very particular about the brand I take myself and recommend to my patients. We chose Rosita Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil, and the reasons are clear.

It is truly raw and unprocessed. Rosita is the only commercially available cod liver oil that is genuinely raw. The oil is extracted using a rare, generations-old technique with no heat, no chemicals, and no mechanical processing. This matters because heat and processing destroy the very nutrients you are taking the supplement for in the first place.

It is wild-caught from pristine waters. Rosita sources authentic wild cod (Gadus morhua) sustainably from the deep fjords of Northern Norway, some of the cleanest ocean waters in the world. The fish are caught using a hook and line on Rosita's own fishing boat.

Every batch is rigorously third-party tested. Each batch undergoes comprehensive testing by leading European institutes for heavy metals, environmental toxins (including PCBs, dioxins, and pesticides), and microbiological contamination. Results consistently meet strict European Commission and WHO standards, and Rosita publishes all testing results publicly so you know exactly what you are getting.

They control every step of production. From fishing and harvesting to bottling the final product, Rosita is involved in every stage. That kind of sea-to-bottle accountability is rare, and it is exactly the standard we hold our clinic recommendations to.
